Darren Reed

Class of 1995 / Inducted 2013 / Football

Darren Reed was a member of the Emory & Henry football squad during the 1991-94 seasons. During that time, he set two school records, served as a team captain, and earned All-America honors. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 for his accomplishments.

Reed, a native of Gate City, Virginia, led the Wasps in tackles three out of four years from his position as a linebacker. He was selected to the All-ODAC First Team in 1991, 1993, and 1994. His sophomore year the team made it to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. In his final season, the Wasps won the conference championship for the second time in three years and Reed was an All-State selection and an All-American Honorable Mention.

Reed went on to earn a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision. He became a physical education teacher and coach for Wise County Schools, and has been a part of a coaching staff that’s won two state football championships and several regional and district titles.  He currently serves as the head football coach at Abingdon High School.
