Emory & Henry Announces 2018 Hall Of Fame Class

The Emory & Henry College Department of Athletics and Alumni Office have announced the 2018 Sports Hall of Fame class.

The annual induction ceremony was held on the morning Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre of the Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts. A group of three individuals were presented with the College’s highest athletic honor while another received a Certificate of Appreciation for years of dedicated service and support.

The 2018 Emory & Henry College Sports Hall of Fame class consists of: Ashley (Pangle) Chandler (’97), Jelani J. Patterson (’03) and Danny E. Almond (’02). William Ashworth Jr. (’31) was honored with the Certificate of Appreciation.

Chandler helped lead the women’s tennis team to a trio of third-place finishes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). She received the Hall Award as Emory & Henry’s outstanding female athlete and was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Patterson was a 2001 First-Team All-American on the football team at defensive end. He was also a two-time All-ODAC selection and helped lead the Wasps to conference championships in 1998 and 2000 and a trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs (2000).

Almond was a standout in men’s soccer and held seven Emory & Henry record at the time of his graduation – five of which stand today. His two league records have stood for the past 16 years as well. He was named all-region, all-state and All-ODAC in 2001.

Ashworth Jr. served as the College’s team physician for over 20 years (1973-96) as well as the College doctor. He also helped create and fund the Ashworth-Hillman Scholarship.
