Arthur S. Withers

A 1973 Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Arthur S. Withers was both a baseball player and coach at Emory & Henry College. A talented pitcher, he was approached by various professional and semi-professional scouts but declined offers in order to complete his education. After graduating, he coached at his alma mater for over a decade. One of his best players was a fellow Hall of Fame member, Montie Weaver, who went on to play in the major leagues for the Washington Senators.

As a student, Withers also played basketball, tennis, and was a manager of the football team. He was a member of the literary society and debate society.

In addition to coaching baseball, Withers also taught English at Emory & Henry. He earned a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University. His collegiate teaching career continued after he left E&H at a number of schools in the Southeast. After retiring, he was given the title professor emeritus at both High Point College and Frederick College.

Arthur S. Withers died on June 28, 1985 at age 90.
