Chris Musser
Chris Musser distinguished himself as a multi-sport athlete, excelling in both football and baseball while helping elevate two programs. His accomplishments as a student-athlete, coupled with his continued service to the institution, have left a lasting impact on Emory & Henry University.
On the football field, Musser was a standout defensive end for the Wasps from 1984–1987. He played a key role in a period of unprecedented success for the program, helping Emory & Henry capture its first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship in 1985 and repeat as conference champions in 1986. Both championship teams earned berths in the NCAA Playoffs, establishing the Wasps among the elite programs in Division III football.
Musser’s senior season in 1987 was particularly memorable. He earned All-ODAC honors and was recognized as a Second Team All-American by Football News, one of the highest individual honors in collegiate football. That same season, Emory & Henry posted an 11-3 record, captured the South Region Championship, and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs, marking one of the most successful campaigns in program history.
Equally impressive were Musser’s accomplishments on the baseball diamond. Competing from 1985–1987, he established himself as one of the most productive hitters in program history and remains prominently featured throughout the Emory & Henry Baseball Record Book. He ranks 11th all-time in career batting average (.351), fifth in career on-base percentage (.486), 10th in career slugging percentage (.573), seventh in career total average (1.270), and holds the distinction of being the toughest hitter in program history to strike out, averaging just one strikeout every 31.857 plate appearances.
Following his playing career, Musser continued his commitment to Emory & Henry athletics by serving as head baseball coach in 1990. His willingness to give back to the institution that shaped him reflects the dedication and leadership that defined his athletic career.
As an All-American football player, record-setting baseball standout, conference champion, and coach, Chris Musser exemplifies the spirit of excellence that defines Emory & Henry athletics.
