PJ Henson
Dr. PJ Henson established himself as one of the most accomplished student-athletes in Emory & Henry men’s soccer history, combining exceptional athletic achievement with outstanding academic success and campus leadership.
A standout forward for the Wasps, Henson played from 2007-09 and returned for the 2011 season after missing 2010 due to injury. Throughout his career, he consistently demonstrated a knack for scoring goals and delivering in crucial moments. At the time of his graduation, Henson held the program record for career goals scored with 27, a mark that now ranks second in school history. He remains the record holder for the fastest goal to begin a match, finding the net just 18 seconds into a contest against Randolph College in 2008.
Henson’s impact on the program extended well beyond individual records. He is tied for the program record with eight match-winning goals, ranks third all-time in career points with 62, and is tied for the most matches played in school history with 70 appearances. His finest offensive season came in 2008 when he scored a career-high 13 goals, earning Second Team All-ODAC honors as a forward. In 2011, he was recognized for his character and sportsmanship as a member of the ODAC/StellarOne Sportsmanship Team.
While excelling on the field, Henson also distinguished himself as one of Emory & Henry’s premier student scholars. A double major in Biology and Chemistry with a Pre-Med focus, he was a perennial Dean’s List honoree and excelled in one of the College’s most demanding academic programs. He served as a supplemental instructor and tutor for biology and chemistry courses, helping fellow students achieve success in the classroom. His work as a laboratory assistant led to a research placement as he prepared to pursue medical school at Texas Tech.
Henson’s academic accomplishments were recognized through membership in numerous honor societies and professional organizations, including the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society and the American Chemical Society. His commitment to excellence in the classroom matched the dedication and success he displayed on the soccer field.
Through his record-setting athletic career, exemplary sportsmanship, academic achievement, and service to the campus community, Dr. PJ Henson embodies the ideals of the Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame and represents the very best of the student-athlete experience.
