Robert E. “Bobby” Magill

Robert Edward “Bobby” Magill, a four-year letterman on the Emory & Henry football squad, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. A graduate of the class of 1965, Magill received All-Area and All-State recognition from the Knoxville News Sentinel and Virginia Small Colleges respectively. During his senior year, Magill rushed 53 times for 312 yards and three touchdowns, while catching 15 passes for 168 yards and another score. He also served as a captain on the football team his senior year. In his career, Magill caught 52 passes for 674 yards and 10 touchdowns. In addition to his football prowess, he lettered one year on the baseball team.

After graduating from E&H, Magill received a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee. He taught and coached at a number of schools, including the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville (Tenn.), George Washington High School in Danville (Va.), and Manchester High School in Richmond (Va.).

Magill left the teaching profession for a position in management with Classic Corporation, a bedroom and leisure furniture manufacturer in Maryland. He later became Vice President of Operations for that company as well as President of Classic Furniture West, a wholly owned subsidiary in California.

Upon his retirement from Classic, he found his way back into education as a classroom teacher and coach.
