Carl Robert Howard

Carl Robert “Bob” Howard, a native of Radford, Virginia, was inducted into the Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his accomplishments on the Wasps football team from 1949-52.

Howard was named to All-Smoky Mountain Conference teams multiple years. His freshman year he scored the touchdown that put the Wasps into the Burley and Tangerine Bowls and was an All-State honorable mention. In 1951, his junior year, he received All-State and Little All-American honorable mentions. His senior year, Howard played in his third bowl game and has the distinguished achievement of catching touchdowns in every bowl game in which he participated during his time as a Wasp.

Howard joined the Army in 1954 and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. During his service, he played football in Army for Headquarter Area Command and was named to the All-Main Conference team.

From 1955-58, Howard was an assistant coach at Radford High School. He received a master’s degree from Virginia Tech in 1960 and became head coach at Petersburg High School, where he led them to their first winning season in 10 years. While at Petersburg, Howard coached Earl Hawkins, whom he helped recruit to Emory & Henry, where Hawkins would become a charter member of the Sports Hall of Fame for his many successes on the Wasps’ football team.

Howard served for many years as chairman of the Automated Management Department of the Army Logistics Management College at Fort Lee. Formerly, he was president of the Parent Teacher Association at Walnut Hill Elementary School, a member of the Board of Directors at the Country Club of Petersburg, and president of the Friday German Club.

Born November 21, 1929, Carl Robert Howard died on April 1, 2013 at the age of 83.
