Gina Miano

Gina Miano, a native of Radford, Virginia, held down the number one flight for singles and doubles tennis all four years she attended Emory & Henry College. A four-year NCAA Division III national tournament contender for singles, Miano was among the best tennis players the college has seen. Her accomplishments were recognized by her 1994 induction into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Miano was a member of three ODAC Championship tennis teams and she was a a two-time ODAC Player of the Year. She was declared the team’s Most Valuable Player twice during her impressive career, and boasted a singles record of 72-33 and a doubles record of 56-33.

In Miano’s freshman year, the team placed second in the ODAC tournament. Her sophomore year, 1984-85, the E&H women’s tennis team were ODAC champions, a title they held for the remainder of Miano’s career. Additionally, Miano herself was ranked among the top 16 in the nation in singles play. The following year, she and doubles partner Elizabeth Cox were ODAC doubles champions and the team finished the season ranked third in the South Region. Her final year, Miano earned a national ranking as the #8 doubles team in the nation with partner Elizabeth Cox and was individually ranked as high as 24th in the nation.

Her senior year, Miano received the Hall Memorial Award, the highest honor given to a female athlete at the college, in recognition of her excellence in athletics, character, and leadership.

Miano, a native of Radford, Virginia, became a licensed professional counselor in 1991 and went on to become a prevention specialist at Pulaski County High School, supervising and coordinating dropout prevention programs.
