Winton Lackey

F. Winton Lackey was born on June 13, 1932 in Appalachia, Virginia and attended Emory & Henry College from 1951 to 1955. A member of the 1997 Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame induction class, he is remembered for his loyalty and dedication to the College and his generosity as a philanthropist.

As an undergraduate, Lackey was a four-year lineman on the football team and a part of the 1953 Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference championship team. He was a catcher on the baseball team for four seasons, a member of the basketball team, the Sigma Iota social fraternity and Calleopean Literary Society.

For many years, Lackey has been a strong supporter of the Emory & Henry athletics programs providing funds for much needed equipment, and assisting with meals and travel expenses. A stalwart on the sidelines at Emory & Henry football games, his dedication to E&H Athletics earned him the football team’s 12th Man Award for the 1997 season as well.

Lackey was a successful businessman in the container industry and founded Mid-Ohio Packaging in Marion, Ohio in 1975. He received recognition from Raymond Donovan, Secretary of Labor under President Reagan, for leadership in conjunction with the Job Training Partnership Act.

Lackey is a life member of the Patrick Henry Society at E&H and has been a member of the Emory & Henry Board of Visitors and the Emory & Henry Board of Trustees. He was also awarded the Distinctive Service to Emory & Henry Award at Charter day in 2000.

Lackey passed away at the age of 86 on July 5, 2018 after a brief illness.
