Donna Miller
Donna Miller was a multi-sport athlete during her time at Emory & Henry, lettering in basketball, volleyball and tennis. Her athletic achievements in tennis and volleyball earned her recognition as a member of the E&H Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
Miller was the No. 1 player for three seasons and the No. 2 player for one season on the Wasps’ women’s tennis team. In doubles, she teamed up with fellow Hall of Fame member Vera Austin for the No. 1 spot for two seasons. During her career, she contributed to an impressive 37-10 team record.
On the volleyball court, Miller was the team setter and defensive specialist. During her career the team accumulated a 46-26 record. In 1973, her freshman year, the team finished with a 17-4 record and took third place in the state; the next season they finished at 14-8 and fourth place finish in the state. Her senior year she was a co-captain and was chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Player.
In addition to her contributions to Emory & Henry on the volleyball and tennis courts, Miller was involved in varsity basketball, club softball, intramural sports, and Kappa Phi Alpha social sorority. She was a member of the Wasps basketball team that finished second in the state during her time at the college. In 1976, Miller’s athletic leadership during her collegiate career was recognized with the Hall Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed on a female athlete at Emory & Henry.
After college, Miller served as an athletic director for the Augusta County Recreation Department, then at Stuart Hall School, where she also taught and coached. She went on to become the director of athletics as well as a tennis coach and instructor at Virginia Intermont College for many years, and she later served in the same capacities at Mary Baldwin College. She led tennis teams at each of these colleges to two conference championship victories.
