John R. Smith

John Smith set a number of records at Emory & Henry during his collegiate basketball career. He recorded 1,020 career rebounds and 290 single-season rebounds; his highest season rebound average was 13.8 per game and his career rebound average was 11.7. His record of most rebounds in a game was 24, set against Clinch Valley in 1972. Smith was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 in recognition of his athletic achievements.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Smith entered a career with Allstate Insurance Company, rising through the ranks from operations supervisor into upper management and administration.
