Kelly Smith Houseright
Kelly Smith Houseright was a standout on the basketball court during her time at Emory & Henry College. She was a three-time All-ODAC and All-State First-Teamer and was selected as ODAC Player of the Year and VaSID State Player of the Year as a junior. Her senior year she was selected to the Second-Team All-State.
Houseright held 20 records when she graduated from Emory & Henry. She scored a record of 1,651 points during her career, including 508 as a junior. She also held the top mark for scoring in a game, 36 points.
Since graduating, Houseright has worked with Wise County and Scott County Schools as a coach and physical education teacher. She earned a master’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Union College in 2006. That same year, Houseright was the 2006 Lonesome Pine District Coach of the Year. After moving to Scott County Schools, she was the 2012 and 2013 Clinch Mountain District Coach of the Year and the 2012 Region D Coach of the Year, having coached her team to a regional championship victory.
Houseright, E&H Women’s Basketball’s most decorated athlete, went into teaching and coaching in Scott County Schools upon graduation. She teaches and coaches at Gate City High School.
