
Lowell Gray “Major” Barker
Lowell Gray “Major” Barker was a native of Blair, West Virginia. This Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame member was inducted for his contributions on the gridiron, but he was also a standout baseball player during his collegiate years.
Barker played guard under Coach “Pedie” Jackson. As a lineman, he was described as being as “silent and immovable as the Stone Mountain.” He was named to the All-Conference team in 1935 and served as captain of the 1936 football squad.
After graduating from Emory & Henry, Barker taught and coached in schools in West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Lowell “Major” Barker passed away in 1969.
