Mike Keating
Mike Keating distinguished himself as one of the most versatile and accomplished student-athletes in Emory & Henry history, earning accolades in baseball, football, and track & field while establishing a legacy that has continued long after his playing days.
On the baseball diamond, Keating was a two-year starter at first base and one of the most productive offensive players of his era. He earned First Team All-ODAC honors in 1980 and led the Wasps in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, stolen bases, and home runs during both the 1980 and 1981 seasons. At the time of his graduation, he held school records for five triples in a season (1981) and six RBIs in a single game against Randolph-Macon in 1980.
In football, Keating was a three-year starting defensive back and one of the premier defenders in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. He earned Second Team All-ODAC recognition in 1980 before being named First Team All-ODAC in 1981. During his senior season, he also received All-State honors and was selected to the Roanoke Times All-State Second Team across all divisions. Keating recorded seven interceptions and returned them for 110 yards in 1981, showcasing his playmaking ability and leadership in the secondary.
Keating’s athletic versatility extended to track & field, where he earned All-ODAC honors in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and triple jump, further demonstrating the speed and athleticism that made him successful across multiple sports.
Following his graduation, Keating built a distinguished career in journalism and publishing. He spent a decade with The Washington Times, serving as Sports Editor and later as Assistant Managing Editor overseeing national and international news as well as the newspaper’s front page. His innovative front-page designs earned numerous national awards.
Keating later founded Golfstyles Magazine, where he serves as owner and publisher. Under his leadership, Golfstyles has been recognized as “America’s Best Regional Golf Magazine” and was voted Best Publication at the International Network of Golf (ING) Conference in 2017.
Through his outstanding achievements as a three-sport athlete and his exceptional professional accomplishments, Mike Keating has exemplified the excellence, versatility, and leadership that define the Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame.
