Ronald “Ronnie” Phelps, a 1970 graduate, was a four-year letterman on the Emory & Henry football squad. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 for his accomplishments on the gridiron.
In high school, Phelps’ team won the West Virginia State Championship and Phelps was elected to the 1965 West Virginia All-State Football Team. At Emory & Henry, Phelps, a linebacker, helped lead the team to impressive records, including a 9-1 season in 1968, his junior year. He was selected to the Virginia Small College All-State Team three consecutive years, 1967-69. He is one of less than ten E&H athletes to achieve this honor three times.
Phelps continued his involvement in athletics after graduating. He has officiated high school football since 1972, as well as youth and flag football leagues and even semi-professional games.
